More than R3 million was spent to make sure that the 2023 South African Boxing Awards ceremony held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban in June was a success.
This was revealed in a response from Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa after he was asked by Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Tsepo Mhlongo about the awards.
Kodwa stated in his response that almost R1 million of the overall costs of R3 238 125.87m was paid to an events manager. The events manager pocketed R964 621.84 while an amount of R700 000 was spent on flights, car hire and accommodation.
The production of the awards function cost R435 040, venue decor amounted to R299 800, trophies and awards R260 411.75, branding items cost R135 152.28, programme directors R112 500, an amount of R87 000 was spent on ground transport, project manager was paid R55 500, while R36 000 was spent on public relations and petty cash was R27 500 with R24 600 having been spent on social media management and marketing.
SA female flyweight titlist Simangele ‘Smash’ Hadebe, who won the Female Boxer of the Year award, received R50 000. And International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight champion Sivenathi ‘Special One’ Nontshinga, the winner of the Male Boxer of the Year award, also received R50 000.
Meanwhile, Kodwa also revealed that the awards venue Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) was sponsored by the eThekwini Municipality.
