It has turned out that Ayabonga ‘Jay Jay’ Sonjica is no longer going to fight the winner of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) Africa junior-featherweight bout between Thato Bonokoane and Tholumusa Ngema.
Bonokoane and Ngema clash in a Mvelo Boxing Promotion tournament at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Sunday.
Sonjica, who is the current South African junior-featherweight champion, is pencilled to fight at a Rumble Africa Promotions (RAP) tournament in East London on Sunday, 28 November.
“I have been made to believe that I will be fighting soon,” Duncan Village-born Sonjica said.
The SA champion has not fought since his win over Innocent Mantengu in September 2019.
He was supposed to have fought in a RAP tournament in Gqeberha in April this year, but the fight didn’t go ahead because of Ghanaian opponent Theophilus Tetteh’s health issues.
“Some of my fights were cancelled because my opponents had problems. I have been training despite COVID-19 messing up things for us. I’m not worried because I will fight again,” he said.
