The ‘marriage’ between former South African champion Phila Mpontshane and his manager Andy Mtshotshisa has come to an abrupt end.
This was confirmed by the Mdantsane-based former national junior-lightweight champion on Monday. Ink Sport has since been told that Mpontshane is now managed by Andile Sidinile even though both the boxer and the former Boxing South Africa (BSA) board member have denied that.
“Yes, I no longer have a manager. My manager and I are not working together anymore,” Mpontshane said without elaborating on the break up.
Mtshotshisa said: “Phila hasn’t said anything to me regarding this. The only thing he told me was that he’s not going to box this year.”
Contacted for comment, Sidinile said: “No, I’m not Phila’s manager. In fact, I’m not even a licensee. People confuse matters here because boxers call me for advice and I give them advice.”
Mpontshane and Mtshotshisa started working together last year. And it was Mtshotshisa, who negotiated Mpontshane’s title fight, which he lost to Sibusiso Zingange in Johannesburg two months ago.
