Boxing South Africa (BSA) won’t bow down to outside pressure and quickly act against Phakamile Jacobs, its provincial manager in the Eastern Cape.
This was what acting BSA chief executive officer Erick Nsikayezwe Sithole said when Ink Sport asked about any action that might have been taken against Jacobs after what happened during a boxing tournament held at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC) earlier this month.
Jacobs incorrectly tallied one of the three score cards after a South African female bantamweight title fight between current champion Sharadene Fortuin and Melissa Miller.
The incorrectly tallied score card resulted in Miller being announced as the winner only to be told three days later that Jacobs had made a mistake when tallying the score cards.
“We are working on that internally. We have internal processes which we are following. We don’t do things because of outside pressure. We do things accordingly,” Sithole said.
Miller scored a split decision victory after judges Lulama Mtya and Thandi Ngodwana had her winning by 95-94 and 97-93 respectively with Allen Matakane giving the fight to Fortuin (96-94). It later transpired that Mtya had had the fight as a draw and his score card should have read 95-95 instead of 95-94.
