It’s not a rumour anymore as the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA) has resolved to take Minister of Sport Zizi Kodwa to court in the wake of Tuesday’s announcement of the new board of Boxing South Africa (BSA).

It was decided during a meeting of the executive committee of the NPBPA, provincial chairpersons and secretaries held virtually on Thursday evening that Kodwa must be taken court following his decision to appoint Sifiso Shongwe as BSA board chairperson.

A source has told Ink Sport that the promoters said Kodwa should have consulted them before appointing the new BSA board, which will take office on Tuesday, 12 December. It was also decided during the meeting that each promoter must contribute money towards the legal fees.

Our source, who was part of the meeting, said: “It’s true that a decision was taken to challenge the appointment of Shongwe as BSA board chairperson.”

NPBPA deputy secretary Phathutshedzo Dongola, who convened Thursday’s meeting, said: “I attended the meeting and I know nothing about a court challenge. But if you trust your source, then you can go ahead and write the story.”

Meanwhile, Shongwe is in the BSA board together with Luxolo September, Sakhiwe Sodo, Romy Titus, Nande Mheshe, Princess Mangoma and Dr Mary-Gene Manthata-Setati.
