The uncertainty caused by the impasse between the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA) and the Minister of Sport, Zizi Kodwa, has forced Golden Gloves to postpone next month’s tournament.
The tournament, which was scheduled for the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park on Saturday, 9 March, was going to be headlined by an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-bantamweight title fight between reigning champion Ricardo Malajika and Marcel Braithwaite from Liverpool in the United Kingdom.
“This state of flux makes it impossible to go ahead as planned. I’m left with no alternative but to postpone,” Golden Gloves managing director Rodney Berman said.
Already, Berman has slated Saturday, 6 April, as the possible date for the postponed tournament if things go back to normal in South African boxing.
Meanwhile, Darrin Rossouw and Brandon Thysse were set to square up against each other in an IBO All-Africa junior-middleweight title contest in the postponed tournament.
