In a bid to make sure that they always have money in their bank account, Chippa United will continue selling players in order for them to invest more funds into the running of the club.
This was disclosed by Chilli Boys chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi while responding to a question on the team’s continued sale of their best players every season.
“Chippa United is a selling team, that we can’t hide. You know when a player is good and a better opportunity comes, we are not the club to stop the progress and the blessing of that player because we believe that if one goes, it’s an opportunity for another one,” Mpengesi remarked.
Ngqamakhwe-born Mpengesi has insisted that selling players does not mean that he’s bringing instability to the team.
“You can’t sell the whole team. For instance, the goalkeeper (Stanley) Nwabali got the fourth yellow card and when I motivated the goalkeeper (Darren Johson) I said “Look, I’m sure it’s a blessing for you. You needed this break”. We want to see most of these players getting exposed,” Mpengesi said.
Mpengesi added: “I don’t think we are a club that wants to win the League. We are a club that wants to remain at this level. You must understand what is our vision. Why do we exist as Chippa United? Maybe in the next two, three years, our vision will change because refusing to sell players has also to do with your capacity and ability to access finance. When we are selling players, we invest the money back. Remember, running a club like this, is very expensive.”
