The inaugural chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Trevor Phillips has died.

Phillips’ death was announced by the PSL on Monday morning.

Popularly known as the British Bulldog in South African football circles, Phillips had two stints as PSL boss. Phillips was PSL CEO for more than two years and then returned to the same position in 2002 and left five years later.

‘‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Trevor “British Bulldog” Phillips, the first chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League. The NSL executive committee conveys its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Phillips’ family, more particularly, his wife Stella and his children Mark and Sharon. We supplicate that God
gives them fortitude at this moment of their extreme grief and pain,’’ a statement from the PSL said.

The statement also added that a moment of silence will be observed ahead of this week’s DStv Premiership and GladAfrica Championship matches.
