The first boxer to turn professional in the Eastern Cape Lawrence ‘Slow Poison’ Ndzondo has died.
The pioneer of professional boxing was 80.
Ndzondo, who was also known by his other moniker ‘Malayisha’ in East London boxing circles, lost his last fight on Wednesday morning.
Even though he was from East London, Ndzondo had to go ditch his amateur vest and turn professional in Durban almost six decades ago. In an interview with Ink Sport in December, Ndzondo said that he no longer attended boxing tournaments because he had lost interest in the fistic sport due to a number of reasons.
In a professional boxing career, which started in 1965 and ended in 1971, Ndzondo fought against legends like Anthony ‘Blue Jaguar’ Morodi and Alfred ‘Kid Bassie’ Buqwana just to mention only two. He recorded 24 wins with nine stoppages, 15 losses and a draw.
