A season that started badly got worse for Kaizer Chiefs after GladAfrica Championship side Richards Bay FC beat them 2-1 in a Nedbank Cup first round match at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec on Sunday evening.
Thabani Dube and Siyabonga Vilane scored for the KwaZulu-Natal side with Leonardo Castro netting for Amakhosi.
The KwaZulu-Natal side showed Chiefs no respect early on and they took the lead through Dube in the 29th minute. Dube scored following Khanyisa Mayo’s corner.
Chiefs’ woes worsened in the 64th minute when Siphosakhe Ntiyantiya was red carded for a second bookable offence.
That Chiefs were one man short didn’t show at times as they launched attack after attack in search of an equaliser.
The equaliser did come in the 76th minute when Castro scored from a Dumisani Zuma pass.
And it looked like the match would go to extra time only for Vilane to give the Richards Bay team their most famous victory in the 90th minute. Vilane scored from a rebound after Bayzel Goldstone’s attempt had hit the upright.
