The late boxing trainer and promoter Mzimasi ‘Bro Mzi’ Mnguni’s life journey ended where it started.
The boxing icon, who passed away at an East London hospital aged 73 last Saturday, was laid to rest in MaZotshweni village, Alice, on Sunday.
MaZotshweni, which is one of the villages along the Tyhume River, is the place where Mnguni was born on 26 July 1947.
Mnguni, a boxing trainer extraordinaire, produced more than 30 South African and world champions.
The likes of Welcome Ncita, Vuyani Bungu, Mbulelo Botile, Zolani Petelo and Masibulele Makepula, just to mention a few, were propelled to world boxing glory by Mnguni.
Not only was Mnguni a boxing trainer and promoter, he was also a farmer, a businessman and a philanthropist.
After matriculating during the 1960s, the bright lights of Johannesburg beckoned and Mnguni left his Alice home to seek gold. It was while working in Johannesburg that he developed an interest in business.
Bro Mzi was a second born in a family of three boys and three girls born to the late Vuyisile and Nomfundiso Mnguni.
