Chippa United coach Dan Malesela reckons that things went as expected during the Chilli Boys’ 2-1 win over Cape Town City in a Nedbank Cup last 16 clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Sunday evening.
Augustine Kwem and Eva Nga Bienvenu scored for the Chilli Boys while Abdul Ajagun netted for the Citizens.
The Chilli Boys are now going to face GladAfrica Championship side Richards Bay FC in the quarter-finals. The KwaZulu-Natal side reached last eight after they beat TS Sporting 2-1 on Sunday.
“Very difficult game. We expected it to go the way it was. One always knew it was a game where if we made a mistake we were going to be punished or if they made a mistake they were going to be punished,” Malesela said about the Citizens match.
The Chilli Boys and the Citizens are meeting again on Wednesday in a DStv Premiership match at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, East London.
“I was very worried. I was actually worried about us going to extra time. There was a time when we were under pressure. I didn’t want to Sisa Dukashe with us being tired,” Malesela said.
On the other hand, Citizens coach Jan Olde Riekering believes that they were not bad during the match.
“I think we more or less dominated the first half. I think we also had our opportunities in the first half. Second half we played a different system. The game was very open. It took us a lot of strength to come back to the match,” the Dutchman said.
Meanwhile, Black Leopards and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila will play in a Limpopo derby in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup. Leopards beat AmaZulu 1-0 on Saturday and TTM defeated Swallows FC 4-3 on penalties on Friday.
The winner of the Mamelodi Sundowns-Polokwane City scheduled for 10 March will face Orlando Pirates.
