Two-time world champion Xolisani ‘Nomeva’ Ndongeni redeemed himself when he stopped Malawian boxer Byson Gwayan in the ninth round in a one-sided fight at a TLB Boxing Promotions tournament held at the Graceland Casino, Secunda, in Mpumalanga on Saturday afternoon.

Ndongeni, who was fighting for the first time since returning to his former trainer Mzamo ‘Chief’ Njekanye, stopped Gwayan in one minute and 54 seconds in the ninth round. The former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) lightweight champion floored Gwayan twice – in the second and eighth rounds.

KwaBhaca-born Ndongeni went into this fight following a shock stoppage by unheralded Prince Dlomo in October last year. Saturday’s win will go a long way in proving whether Ndongeni’s decision to return to Njekanye was good or bad.

Meanwhile, Simangele Hadebe scored a unanimous decision win over Melissa Miller in the only female bout in the tournament. Hadebe was pitted against Miller after South African female flyweight champion Noxolo Makhanavu withdrew from their title fight. This followed after Makhanavu collapsed while jogging with her brother Xola Sifama in East London on Tuesday evening.
