Award-winning boxing promoter Andre Thysse of Real Steel Promotions is due to appear before a Boxing South Africa (BSA) disciplinary committee.
Thysse is charged with violating COVID-19 regulations after he attended Jackie Brice’s tournament in Cape Town last December. Thysse, who is going to be hauled over the coals on Wednesday next week, attended Brice’s tournament to support his boxer Josh Pretorius during a then vacant South African heavyweight title fight against eventual winner Tian Fick.
“According to them I have violated COVID-19 regulations after I attended a tournament in Cape Town where my boxer Josh Pretorius was fighting. They say I was a spectator even though I’m the promoter of the boxer who fought there. These people don’t understand team work in boxing,” the 2016 South African promoter of the year said.
The former South African super-middleweight champion has vowed to fight BSA as he says he won’t be cowed into silence.
“The biggest problem at the moment is that you get victimised for speaking out and asking questions,” he said.
Contacted for comment, acting BSA chief executive officer Cindy Nkomo said: “It’s a bit early to discuss this. I want to respect the privacy of any licensee.”
