A public outcry and a threat from a political party – Econimic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – have forced Chippa United chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi to rescind his decision to employ foul-mouthed Belgian coach Luc Eymael as his club’s technical adviser.
Mpengesi appointed Eymael on Monday only to get a public backlash for his decision. Eymael angered Africans when he insulted Young Africans supporters while coaching the Tanzanian club.
This is the second time Mpengesi has caved in to public pressure following his appointment of Eymael. The same happened last December when he appointed the former Polokwane City, Free State Stars and Black Leopards coach following Lehlohonolo Seema’s sacking.
“Chippa have decided not to continue with Eymael’s appointment, who will proceed to return to Belgium. It is clear that Eymael himself requires further time to clear his name,” a statement from the Chilli Boys said on Wednesday.
“We as a club maintain our stance against racism of any form and wish to make it clear that our intended appointment of Eymael would not have happened were the allegations against him been validated in any form.”
The statement also added that the 61-year-old Belgian assured the club that he was going to take legal action concerning his rights.
