Pitso Mosimane had a nasty experience on his return to the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville before he led his team Al Ahly to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League following a 3-1 aggregate win over his former club Mamelodi Sundowns.
Saturday’s match ended 1-1 with Yasser Ibrahim scoring for the Egyptian giants while Mosa Lebusa netted for the Brazilians.
Unruly Sundowns supporters stopped the Al Ahly bus before it entered the stadium and swore at Mosimane and his mom.
“I was a little bit emotional when I saw placards outside. And they stopped the bus, all these people swearing at me, swearing at my mother. It’s football I understand. I know the person who did it, he’s just bitter,” Mosimane said.
“I have to move on with my life. There’s more, I don’t want to talk about. The things I received before coming to South Africa. I thought I left a very good team, the best team I have ever had.”
Turning to the game and its outcome, Mosimane said he was happy to have taken the Red Devils to the next round of the competition.
“Of course, we are happy with the result, but not too happy about the whole performance. I’m happy with the organisation, happy with the spirit of the players, happy with the game plan they followed. But I did not achieve to play quick out of the break. The game came out the way I expected. As I said, having the ball doesn’t mean you will win a match,” Mosimane said.
Meanwhile, Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi admitted that they had a tough game against the Egyptians.
“We knew it was not going to be easy. I think we also made it a little bit difficult by conceding from that set-piece,” Mngqithi said.
“We tried very hard to push them. They were sitting with a low block, which we tried to break down. With everything we tried we could not get the desired outcome.”
