Age-defying Nonito ‘The Filipino Flash’ Donaire Junior made history by becoming the oldest bantamweight champion following his win over Frenchman Nordine Oubaali in Carson, California in the United States, on Saturday (Sunday morning SA time).
The 38-year-old Donaire Jr stopped Oubaali in the fourth round to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title. The 34-year-old Oubaali made three visits to the canvas during the fight.
This is the second time Donaire Jr captures the WBC bantamweight crown having initially done so when he stopped Mexican boxer Fernando Montiel in February 2011.
Donaire Jr once held the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight titles. He is also a former WBA “Super” featherweight, WBO and International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-featherweight as well as International Boxing Federation (IBO) and IBF flyweight champion.
