A torn left eye retina has forced unbeaten World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Errol Spence Junior to pull out of his fight against Manny Pacquiao set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, United States, on Saturday, 21 August (Sunday, 22 South African time).
The Filipino legend is now going to face Yordenis Ugas from Cuba. Ugas’ World Boxing Association (WBA) ‘Super’ welterweight title is going to be at stake during his fight against Pacquiao.
“I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to fight Manny Pacquiao on August 21. I was excited about the fight and the event. Unfortunately, the doctors found a tear in my left eye and said I needed to get surgery on it,” Spence Jr said in a statement.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, asked people to pray for the 31-year-old Spence Jr’s speedy recovery.
