Gavin Hunt seems to be a very lucky coach as Chippa United chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi has revealed that he has given him no mandate.
Instead, Mpengesi has said that anything better than just surviving relegation at the end of the season would be a bonus.
“I didn’t give the coach a mandate. It’s difficult for me to give the coach a mandate after having fought against relegation in the last four, five seasons,” Mpengesi said.
“We asked him to make sure that people don’t end up fasting and praying that we survive due to our bad position on the log. He has assured us that his aim is to finish in the top-eight and challenge for cups. That’s his wish, not our mandate. We no longer want to be the laughing stock of South African football.”
The Chilli Boys have collected four points in their first two opening matches from a win and a draw. Hunt’s boys beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, last Saturday and drew goalless with Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday evening.
“We are not going to put our coach under pressure. We will let him do his job. If he wins something, then that’s a bonus. If he finishes inside the top-eight then that’s gonna be good,” Mpengesi said.
