Rulani Mokwena credited the entire team after Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday evening.
The Brazilians bagged three points courtesy of goals from Grant Kekana and Peter Shalulile.
“Credit to the entire team. Credit to the technical staff. Coach Manqoba (Mngqithi), coach Steve (Komphela), coach Wendell (Robinson),” the Sundowns co-coach said.
“Even with the subs coming in you could see the intensity. Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns, strong, powerful performance.”
Mokwena reiterated that they knew what to expect from Amakhosi thus they were able to manage the game well.
“We worked a little bit on different schemes in anticipation for the different flexibility because Stuart Baxter is a top coach. He has watched us, he’s prepared very well. But we were also prepared very well,” Mokwena remarked.
“We invested a lot of time. We worked extremely hard. Big, big performance from the players.”
The Tshwane giants have seven points from two wins and a draw while Amakhosi are on four points after winning once, drawing once and losing once.
Meanwhile, Chiefs coach Baxter insisted that they were not disgraced despite losing the match.
“We started the game very, very well, I think for 20 minutes, dominating the game completely and came their goal. That was a poor goal from our side,” Baxter commented.
“It wasn’t reflective of the game at all. We were on the back foot for 15 minutes. We were waiting for Sundowns. I think the last 15 minutes we got the game back, in the first half. In the second half, after 70 odd minutes, I still don’t know how we conceded. There was no great play, we chased the game.”
