Ayanda Ndulani retained his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) minimumweight title when he defeated Siphamandla Baleni on a split decision at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC) on Saturday evening. 

In an eyesore fight, judges Tony Nyangiwe and Siphiwo Mbini scored the bout 117-111 and 116-112 respectively for Ndulani while Lulama Mtya had Baleni winning on 118-114. 

This was Ndulani’s first defence of the title he won when he stopped Nkosinathi Joyi in the fourth round at the same venue in May. 

Meanwhile, IBO junior-bantamweight champion Gideon Buthelezi scored a split decision win over Namibian Jonas Matheus in a non-title fight. 

Two judges scored the fight 96-94 for Boipatong-based Buthelezi while the other had Matheus winning by the same margin.
