Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took four wickets as the South Africans bowled out India for 223 on day one of the third and final Test at Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Indian captain Virat Kohli top scored with 79 runs from 201 deliveries while Cheteshwar Pujara knocked 43 off 77 balls.
Rabada took four wickets for 73 runs in 22 overs and Marco Jansen claimed three for 55 in 18 overs.
At stumps, the Proteas were 17 for one after Jasprit Bumrah had claimed Dean Elgar’s wicket for three from 16 balls.
Keshav Maharaj on six off 12 deliveries and Aiden Markram on eight in 20 balls will resume play on Wednesday morning.
