Bangile Nyangani is almost speechless and devastated after his South African title fight against Thembani Okolo from Gqeberha was called off.
Nyangani was set to defend his SA minimumweight title against Okolo at the UFC Centre in Paulshof, Johannesburg, on Thursday. However, the fight was cancelled after Okolo’s disappearance.
“There is no fight. This is too much for me as I spent a lot of money preparing for this fight only for it to be called off. Anyway, I’m happy that the tournament is going ahead,” Nyangani said.
The 27-year-old Nyangani from Bityi in Mthatha was going to make his first defence of the title he won when he dethroned former champion Siyakholwa Kuse in July last year.
According to his trainer Mzwandile Sidina and manager Ndumiso Fina, Okolo disappeared last Friday – two days before he was due to travel to Johannesburg.
