Banyana Banyana defender Janine van Wyk has admitted that they had a very tough game during their 3-0 loss to Zambia in an international friendly match at the Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Saturday.
The Zambians’ goals came courtesy of a brace from Barbra Banda and Avell Chitundu’s strike. All three goals were scored in the first half.
“It was a very tough game, very tough opponents. Barbra gave us a lot of problems, running in behind the defenders. She did that in the first half, but we managed to stop her in the second half, she didn’t score any goals,” Van Wyk said.
“We managed to change the system in the second half to give the team a little more balance in the backline. The result was not what we wanted. It’s an eye opener for all of us that we are not in the level where we need to be at.”
Meanwhile, coach Desiree Ellis’ team used the Zambia match as preparations for their African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria at home on Friday.
