Sibusiso Zingange from Boksburg in Ekurhuleni reckons that South African champion Phila Mpontshane’s time as a national title holder will come to an end on Thursday next week.
Zingange challenges SA junior-lightweight titlist Mpontshane at the EFC Centre in Johannesburg. This fight, which is Mpontshane’s fifth title defence, is going to be shown live on ESPN Africa.
“Mpontshane has held the title for some time now and it’s time for him to be dethroned. I’m not afraid of him. He should be afraid of me because he’s got the title, which is something I want,” Zingange said after a sparring session with SA junior-welterweight champion Prince Dlomo on Thursday.
This duel was supposed to have taken place at the Booysens Boxing Gym in Johannesburg in December last year, but it got postponed after Mpontshane and his trainer Dudu Bungu tested positive for COVID-19.
“We are ready for Mpontshane even if we could be asked to jump into the ring now, I would not have a problem because I would beat him. We have studied how he fights even though he hasn’t fought in more than two years,” the challenger said.
“It might happen that he has changed his fighting style. Anyway, that won’t be a problem as we have done our homework as we believe that he’s not going to bring anything new.”
