Boxing South Africa (BSA) and the SABC have reached an agreement which will see the return of live boxing to the public broadcaster’s television and radio platforms.
The agreement stipulates that SABC 2 will flight two live tournaments a month. The public broadcaster will also show live world titles.
“We have already been broadcasting both local and international boxing on SABC – both the Sport Channel and SABC – for the past year or so. All we have said is that we are going to formalise broadcast dates and ensure all promoters will need to go through Boxing SA going forward rather than approach us directly,” SABC Sport general manager Gary Rathbone said.
BSA director of operations Mandla Ntlanganiso revealed that his organisation and the SABC have agreed in principle.
“We are in the final stages of our talks. In agreement and principle, the SABC is on board. They are going to show two live tournaments a month starting from April,” Ntlanganiso remarked.
“There are a few things that we need to sort out. We will also go explain to our promoters and inform them about what’s expected of them.”
The public broadcaster has been showing some boxing tournaments on SABC Sport Channel on DTT and Openview Channel 124.
I’m curious. How does 2 shows a month revitalize public interest in the sport? ????
