French boxer Nordine Oubaali has announced his retirement from boxing almost a year after he lost his world title to Nonito Donaire from the Philippines.
The 35-year-old Frenchman, who is of Moroccan descent, announced his retirement through French newspaper LeFigaro.
“I wrote my story and learned to transmit it. After being WBC champion and defending my title repeatedly, I make the decision to hang up the gloves. It’s a reflected decision to have no regrets,” Oubaali, who has a professional record of 17 wins with 12 knockouts and one loss, told LeFigaro.
Oubaali suffered a fourth stoppage loss to Donaire when he attempted to make a third defence of the World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title in May last year.
Meanwhile, Oubaali also had eyesight problems, which led to him having surgery in June and December last year.
“I knew my eyesight was diminished, but nothing could get rid of this global opportunity which is the fruit of all these long years of work and sacrifice,” Oubaali said.
After winning the WBC title during a fight against American boxer Rau’shee Warren in January 2019, Oubaali made two successful defences. He defeated Takuma Inoue from Japan and Filipino boxer Arthur Villanueva.
