After losing his International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title to Sunny Edwards in April last year, Moruti ‘Babyface’ Mthalane is hoping to exit the fistic sport with a bang as his handlers are organising a last fight for him.
The 39-year-old three-time world champion from Lindelani in KwaZulu-Natal is set to lace his gloves for the last time later this year.
“Yes, we are doing a farewell for Moruti. Quite frankly, he deserves a farewell fight. We are still looking for an opponent for him,” Mthalane’s trainer Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan said.
Mthalane said: “I have renewed my licence with Boxing South Africa. I’m back at the gym, working very hard. I would like to fight around August or September because that’s when I think I will be ready.”
Mthalane is still rated highly by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO). The WBC rates him fourth while the WBO has him in ninth spot with the IBF rating him 14th.
Meanwhile, the former South African, International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and IBF flyweight titlist has an impressive record as a boxer.
He has a professional record of 39 victories with 26 knockouts and three losses. Only Nkqubela Gwazela and WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire have managed to stop Mthalane since he made his professional debut in December 2000.
