Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos reckons that Morocco are the team to beat in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Bafana were drawn in Group K together with Morocco, Zimbabwe and Liberia during the draw conducted in Johannesburg on Tuesday evening.
“It’s clear that Morocco is the best team in our group. They were in the AFCON in January. They were eliminated by Egypt. They have some players playing in Belgium. I know this team very well. So I think if we want to be first in the group, we have to beat Morocco,” Broos remarked.
The 69-year-old Belgian is also cautious about meeting Zimbabwe, who played twice against Bafana during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“We played against Zimbabwe for the qualifiers of the World Cup. We know them very well. We played two times against them last year. I think if we can beat them twice it can be very good for us,” Broos said.
Meanwhile, the former Indomitable Lions mentor and AFCON winner has admitted that Liberia are a closed book to him.
“Liberia is a team I don’t know. I don’t know the players. It’s up to us in the next weeks to look at the games of Liberia. Maybe Liberia is the weakest team in the group. Maybe it’s dangerous to underestimate an opponent,” Broos said.
