Angolan side Petro Atletico de Luanda have dumped Mamelodi Sundowns out of the CAF Champions League following a 3-2 aggregate win.
The two sides drew 1-1 in the second leg played at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Saturday evening. Petro defeated the Brazilians 2-1 in the first leg in Angola last weekend.
The Tshwane giants were the first to score through Brian Onyango from a rebound in the 49th minute. This was after Petro goalkeeper Wellington de Lima Gomes had failed to hold on to Lyle Lakay’s free kick.
Drama unfolded five minutes later after Joachim Cunga Balanga had scored for the visitors. Sundowns captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango protested to Ethiopian referee Bamlak Tessema saying Pedro Pinto had fouled him before Balanga scored.
After consulting the VAR, Tessema ruled that indeed Pinto had fouled Denis Onyango and as a result he disallowed Balanga’s goal.
Tessema consulted VAR yet again and concluded that Andile Jali had committed a foul inside the box. Petro captain Tiago Azulao beat Denis Onyango from the penalty spot in the 64th minute.
