Russian boxer Dmitry Bivol handed Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez his second defeat in almost nine years when he retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) light-heavyweight title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on Sunday morning (South African time).
Bivol showed Alvarez no respect from the first bell landing telling blows. His clean shots, which found the intended target were the difference during the fight and it was then no wonder that it was his hand which was raised in the end. All three judges – Tim Cheatham, Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld – scored the fight 115-113 in favour of the Russian.
It’s the first time the 31-year-old Mexican lost a fight since his loss to Floyd Mayweather Junior in September 2013.
Bivol, 31, has stretched his unbeaten record to 20 wins with 11 knockouts while Alvarez dropped to 57 victories (39 stoppages), two losses and two draws.
