Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi reckons that the Brazilians deserved at least one penalty during their 1-1 drawn match against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Sunday evening.

The Tshwane giants, who won the 2021/22 DStv Premiership trophy with four games to spare, were under pressure at the beginning of the match, but they survived the attack from Amakhosi.

“First half, we didn’t create too many chances even though we played well. Second half, I thought we posed a threat and I believe that we should at least have had one penalty or a free kick. But a very good game of football after all,” Mngqithi said.

The Brazilians survived an anxious moment when Amakhosi were awarded a penalty towards the end of the match. Their goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse saved Keagan Dolly’s penalty much to the joy of the Sundowns bench.

“It was nice for people to know that Reyaad is very good on penalties because we were very confident as a team that he’s going to save the penalty. But I just feel we also deserved to get one as well,” Mngqithi remarked.

Meanwhile, Chiefs stand-in coach Arthur Zwane insisted that they should have done better when they put the Brazilians under pressure, especially in the beginning of the first half.

“I think we started very well. I think for 20 minutes we were a better team in the first half. From there we dropped a little bit. We allowed them to control the game. Last seven minutes of the first half we came back in the game creating good scoring opportunities,” Zwane said.
