This is one of Mdantsane boxer Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete’s most important weeks as he embarks on a journey to reclaim his place in world boxing.
Tete landed in the United Kingdom early on Monday morning after he left South Africa on Sunday evening hoping to make a name in world boxing once again.
The 34-yearr-old Tete didn’t get it right the last time he visited the UK as he suffered a third round stoppage loss to Filipino boxer Johnriel Casimero in November. In the process, Tete lost his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) crown to Casimero.
He’s determined to make amends this time around as he faces Jason Cunningham from Yorkshire at the Ovo Arena, Wembley, London in the United Kingdom in Saturday. At stake are going to be Cunningham’s IBF International and Commonwealth junior-featherweight titles.
“We have arrived in the UK. Now I have to show to Frank Warren that I’m still the same Zolani Tete and will win the fight against Jason Cunningham,” Tete said after landing at Heathrow Airport.
Warren has promised the winner of the Tete-Cunningham fight a shot at World Boxing Association (WBA) ‘Super’ and IBF junior-featherweight champion Murudjon Akhmadaliev’s titles.
Akhmadaliev from Uzbekistan successfully defended his titles with a 12th round stoppage of American boxer Ronny Rios on Sunday morning (South African time).
