Mexican boxer Rey Vargas won his second World Boxing Council (WBC) title after he defeated Mark Magsayo from the Philippines at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, United States on Sunday morning (South African time).
Unbeaten Vargas gave the Filipino boxer his first loss winning by a split decision to claim the WBC featherweight crown. The judges’ score cards read 115-112 twice for Vargas, who is a former WBC junior-featherweight champion, and 114-113 for Magsayo.
The 27-year-old Magsayo had only been a world champion since January this year when he dethroned American Gary Russell Junior.
Vargas, 31, has improved his record to 36 victories with 22 knockouts while Magsayo dropped to 24 wins (16 stoppages) and a loss.
