The edition of this year’s KZN Premier’s Cup was launched in Durban on Tuesday with the province’s five DStv Premiership teams and one from the Motsepe Foundation Championship going to take part in the tournament.
This tournament is going to be played over two days – at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban, on Saturday, 30 July and at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 31 July.
“This is an important pre-season tournament that was borne out of a collective wisdom and effort by all of us,” KZN MEC of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela said.
“The contribution of this tournament in helping our teams to finalise their pre-season preparations is there for all of us to see. With five teams in the Premiership ranks, we are envied by other provinces and some have come here to benchmark on how we do things. We want to maintain this status quo and to continually improve.”
Richards Bay FC are going to play against Royal AM while Motsepe Foundation Championship side Uthongathi face Maritzburg United in the preliminary round.
The winner between the Natal Rich Boyz and Thwihli Thwahla will face whoever wins the Uthongathi and Team of Choice match in the semi-finals.
Another semi-final encounter is going to be between Durban clubs AmaZulu and Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Each of the six teams is going to pocket a R625 000 participation fee from the R3,75 million set aside for the tournament.
