The president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Danny Jordaan has praised Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis after she led her team to Women’s Africa Cup of Nations glory in Morocco on Saturday evening.
Jordaan was speaking at the OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park after Banyana, who beat the hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Saturday evening, landed following their conquest in North Africa.
“We are here today to celebrate. The celebration is certainly an honour for us as a country. This celebration is about a team that delivered on our vision. A team that stuck to the plan, a team that carried the aspirations of our country and their own aspirations to win this Africa Cup of Nations,” Jordaan said.
It was sixth time lucky for Banyana after they failed to win the tournament on five occasions. They lost three times to the Nigerian Super Falcons and twice to Equatorial Guinea.
“The team was not deterred by the disappointment, they tried five times already and this was their sixth attempt. To coach Desiree Ellis, we are here to salute you. You’ve done a magnificent job, congratulations.”
