One of the most successful footballers to grace South Africa’s football fields Hlompho Kekana has retired.
Kekana, who spent the whole year without kicking the ball after he was released by Mamelodi Sundowns, announced his retirement on Tuesday.
“It’s been an enjoyable journey filled with so many highlights. I’ve played with and been coached some of SA’s best. I shared the field with the world’s best. I’ve lived the dream,” Kekana said.
Kekana spent 10 years at the Tshwane giants after joining them from Bloemfontein Celtic.
He won 12 trophies with Sundowns including the 2016 CAF Champions League and 2017 CAF Super Cup. His trophy haul also includes six leagues titles, two Nedbank Cup trophies and two Telkom Knockout gold medals.
Kekana made history in March 2012 when he scored a record seven goals during Sundowns’ 24-0 win over Northern Cape amateur side Powerlines FC in a Nedbank Cup match.
The 37-year-old Kekana from Zebediela in Limpopo will now concentrate on his job as an analyst on SABC Sport.
