It was a humiliation which none of their vociferous supporters dreamt of as Kaizer Chiefs were clobbered 4-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in a DStv Premiership encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon.
Chiefs’ problems started in the sixth minute after the defending champions took the lead through Gaston Sirino following a Siyabonga Ngezana blunder in the Amakhosi defence.
Last season’s top goalscorer Peter Shalulile made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. The Brazilians were awarded the penalty after Shalulile was brought down by Ngezana inside the box.
Shalulile completed his brace when he netted to make it 3-0 in the 53rd minute following a pass from Themba Zwane.
Amakhosi had a chance to score in the 56th minute, however Khama Billiat’s penalty was saved by Ronwen Williams. Match referee Victor Gomes awarded Chiefs the penalty after Teboho Mokoena had fouled Kgaogelo Sekgota inside the box.
Second half substitute Abubeker Nasir, who came on for Sirino on the hour mark, opened his account for Sundowns as he scored their fourth goal in the 76th minute.
