Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has revealed that they spoke about a better approach to their match against Brazil on Monday evening, but things didn’t work out well for them as the Canaries humiliated her team 6-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
This was the second loss to the Copa America champions having lost to them 3-0 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto last Friday.
“Look, we spoke in the beginning about minimising our mistakes. We spoke about being brave and try to play the presser. We spoke about creating opportunities, but we didn’t start well,” Ellis said.
“I think the goal we gave away was a rush of blood. I thought after that we played better and again we gave away silly goals.”
Ellis is, however, happy that they managed to create a few chances even though the Brazilians punished them heavily.
“It’s the mistakes that we made that top teams like Brazil count on. I felt when we were on the ball we looked very good,” the Cape Town-born coach said.
“We created half chances. But all round the result wasn’t great. We still have a lot of work to do. A lot of players were tested. I’m not happy with the result.”
Meanwhile, Brazil’s Swedish-born coach Pia Sundhage said that the scoreline could have been worse than it was.
“I’m really pleased with the six goals. It could have been more. We created a couple of more chances. It was different from the other game. I’m also happy about the substitutions we did. They changed the playing style a bit,” the Swede said.
