Filipino boxers invaded East London and left a lasting impression as they broke the hearts of local boxing fans.

Jayr Raquinel, 25, was the ring leader of the invasion as he stopped Lwandile Ngxeke in the second round of their vacant World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Intercontinental junior-bantamweight title fight.

Raquinel’s uppercut did the damage from the first round and it was then no wonder when the Filipino sent Ngxeke to the canvas in the second round. The 27-year-old Ngxeke beat the count, but Raquinel smelled blood and finished the Sada-born boxer forcing fight referee Lulama Mtya to intervene.

Raquinel’s compatriot Jake Amparo was the first Filipino to win when he outpointed Mthokozisi Ngxaka in the main supporting bout.

However, Melvin Manangquil was not so lucky as he lost on points to South African junior-flyweight champion Mpumelelo Tshabalala in an eight rounds bout.
