Olivier Giroud scored twice as France cruised to a 4-1 win over Australia in a 2022 FIFA World Cup group stages match at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar, on Tuesday evening.
Les Bleus came from behind to win this match after the Socceroos had raced to an early ninth minute lead through Adelaide United forward Craig Goodwin’s goal.
France pressed forward as they searched for an equaliser and they levelled matters in the 27th minute from Adrien Rabiot’s goal following a cross from Theo Hernandez.
Nathaniel Atkinson’s blunder allowed Rabiot to cross to Giroud, who netted France’s second goal in the 32nd minute. This was Giroud’s 50th goal in a France jersey.
After terrorising Atkinson, Kylian Mbappe finally registered his name on the score sheet heading in from Ousmane Dembele’s cross in the 68th minute for his fifth World Cup goal and 29th in France colours.
Three minutes later, Giroud scored his second goal of the match to make it 4-1. This was Giroud’s 51st goal thus making France’s joint all-time top goalscorer with Thierry Henry.
