Belgium won their opening 2022 FIFA World Cup match when they beat Canada 1-0 in a group stages clash at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday evening.

The Canadians started the match like a house on fire, taking it to the Belgians and it was no wonder that they were awarded a penalty early on.

The penalty came after Tajon Buchanan’s strike hit the wrist of Yannick Carrasco. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Alphonso Davies’ penalty in the 10th minute.

The missed penalty didn’t dampen Canada’s resolve as they continued to dominate the match against their much-more fancied opponents. Unfortunately, they failed to turn their dominance into goals.

However, it was the Red Devils, who went to the half-time break leading 1-0 after Michy Batshuayi netted in the 44th minute. That proved to be the only goal of the match.
