Desperately needing a win after a shock 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening match, Argentina came good as they beat Mexico 2-0 in a FIFA World Cup group stages match at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail, Qatar, on Saturday evening.
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who was tightly-marked for the better part of the match, sent a grass cutter, which beat Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in the 64th minute.
The Paris Saint Germain star scored the goal after he received an assist from Angel Di Maria to equal the number of World Cup goals, eight, netted by the late Diego Maradona.
This was the 35-year-old Messi’s 13th strike in Argentina colours in 2022, his 93rd international goal and his 788th senior career goal.
Argentina doubled the lead when Enzo Fernandez picked up the ball following a corner and curled it past Ochoa in the 87th minute.
