France are still on course to defend the World Cup title after they defeated England 2-1 in a quarter-final match at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar, on Saturday evening.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from long range to give Les Bleus the lead in the 17th minute.

The Three Lions equalised through their captain Harry Kane’s penalty in the 54th minute. England were awarded a penalty after Bukayo Saka was fouled inside the box by Tchouaméni.

France’s all-time top goalscorer Olivier Giroud restored Les Bleus’ lead with a header from an Antoine Griezmann cross in the 78th minute.

England had a chance to equalise when they were awarded a second penalty after Theo Hernandez had fouled Mason Mount inside the box. Unfortunately, Kane shot wide from the penalty spot.

The 1998 and 2018 world champions are going to face first time semi-finalists Morocco on Wednesday next week.
