Award-winning boxing trainer Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan and world champion Sivenathi ‘Special One’ Nontshinga have been nominated for awards by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA). 

Nathan, the 2017 and 2018 SA Boxing Trainer of the Year winner, is vying for the Eddie Futch Trainer of the Year gong. He’s competing with Bill Haney, Derrick James, Gennady Mashyanov and Bob Santos. Haney trains his son Devin, James is Errol Spence Junior’s mentor, Mashyanov trains Dmitry Bivol and Santos is Hector Garcia’s trainer. 

On the other hand, International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight champion Nontshinga’s clash against Mexican Hector Flores early in September has been nominated for the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier Fight of the Year award with the winners going to be announced on Tuesday, 10 January 2023. 

The 23-year-old Nontshinga from East London became the first boxer to defeat Flores when he won their clash by a split decision in Mexico.
