One-time South African boxing fans’ favourite Nkosinathi ‘Mabhere’ Joyi from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape is itching for action after spending more than 16 months without a fight.
The former world champion has not laced his gloves since his fourth round stoppage loss to current International Boxing Organisation (IBO) minimumweight champion Ayanda Ndulani in May last year.
“I’m still a boxer even though I have not fought in more than a year. You know mos that I last fought when I lost my title to Ndulani. It’s been frustrating not to fight for this long. I have been training without getting fights,” Joyi whom BoxRec and The Ring Magazine once rated him as the number one boxer in the minimumweight division said.
The 39-year-old Joyi, who is trained by former South African flyweight champion Ncedo Cecane, has revealed that he has a fight lined up in the first quarter of 2023.
“I’m going to fight again in March next year in Johannesburg. And I have decided to fight in the flyweight division. I hope and believe that I will be fit and ready in March,” the erstwhile International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight champion said.
