American boxer Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis successfully defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title when defeated Hector Luis Garcia at the Capital One Arena in Washington, United States, on Sunday morning (South African time).
Davis from Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States exchanged fierce blows with Garcia with the Dominican Republic boxer stealing some rounds.
However, 28-year-old Davis landed ferocious body blows and wore down Garcia something which led to his corner intervening to save him from further punishment in the ninth round.
Unbeaten Davis has improved his record to 28 wins with 26 knockouts while the 31-year-old Garcia dropped to 16 victories (10 stoppages) and a loss.
Meanwhile, Jaron Ennis from the US defeated Germany-based Ukrainian Karen Chukhadzhian in the main supporting bout.
All three judges – Dave Braslow, Tammye Jenkins and Paul Wallace – scored the fight 120-108 for Ennis to win the interim International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight crown.
