France captain and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris announced his retirement for the French national team on Monday.

The 36-year-old Lloris made 145 appearances for France since making his Les Bleus debut in 2008. He was appointed as Les Bleus captain in February 2012.

“There comes a time when you need to step aside. I have always said the French national team does not belong to any one person,” Lloris said.

Lloris, who was born in Nice, retired having won the 2018 FIFA World Cup trophy in Russia and a silver medal in Qatar following a loss to Argentina in the final last month.
