While family members of the late Mfusi Maxhayi are busy preparing to lay him to rest in Ilitha township, Ntabozuko, in the Buffalo City Metro, this coming Saturday, his alleged killer is yet to be apprehended by the police.

This was revealed by provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana following an enquiry by Ink Sport

“No new developments in the case and no arrest made,” Kinana said on Thursday morning.

Maxhayi, a former South African title contender, passed away after he was shot in Mdantsane early on Monday last week. He was 35 years old.

Once trained by Boyboy Mpulampula at the Enothole Gym in Mdantsane, Maxhayi was based in Johannesburg where he was a fitness trainer and had only come back to the Eastern Cape for the festive season.

Originally from Ilitha township, Maxhayi is a former Eastern Cape, IBO International and World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight champion.

Maxhayi lost on points to Bongani Mahlangu in his failed bid to win the South African junior-featherweight title at the Orient Theatre in East London in September 2015.
