Boxing South Africa (BSA) has finally acted against J4Joy Boxing Promotions boss Jacob Mnisi after his promotional outfit failed to host a tournament in Durban last December.

Mnisi’s promoter’s licence has since been suspended and BSA is going to haul him before a disciplinary committee to explain what really happened in Durban.

J4Joy Boxing Promotions had scheduled a tournament at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday, 11 December, but ran into serious problems something which necessitated two postponements.

Still, the tournament couldn’t go ahead on the third date despite the number of bouts having been cut into half after the promoter’s failure to meet overseas boxers’ financial obligations as well as the non-payment of a sanctioning fee to the World Boxing Federation (WBF).

“Boxing South Africa (BSA) hereby wishes to advise the media and boxing stakeholders that the board of Boxing SA has resolved to suspend the promoter’s licence of Mr Jacob Mnisi who operates under the name and style J4Joy Boxing Promotions with immediate effect. The suspension is based amongst others on developments around the invitation of Floyd Mayweather to South Africa and activities around the tournament issue. Boxing SA will in due course conduct a disciplinary hearing against Mr Mnisi,” a BSA statement said on Thursday evening.

The three bouts that were going to take place were the KwaZulu-Natal junior-welterweight title fight between Lindokuhle Dlamini and Ntethelelo Nkosi as well as the South African junior-welterweight bout where current champion Prince Dlomo was going to defend his crown against Marcus Lebogo.

The vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan-African bantamweight title fight between Rofhiwa Nemushungwa and Fillipus Shaanika from Namibia was also slated to take place.

However, the vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Intercontinental lightweight title contest between Azinga ‘Golden Boy’ Fuzile and Mexican Rene Tellez Giron, Mapule Ngubane’s World Boxing Organisation (WBO) International female middleweight fight against American boxer Maricela Cornejo as well as the WBF bantamweight bout between Ronald Malindi and Jorge Luis Orozco Mendoza from Mexico had already been scrapped from the bill.
